Effluent treatment paper mill

As part of new construction of a 100% recycled paper mill in Louisiana Waterleau built an anaerobic treatment plant for process wastewater under a design build contract. Waterleau’s treatment train included: equalization, a BIOTIM® UASB reactor, feed pumps, recycle pumps, chemical systems, biogas compressor, biogas flare and prefabricated concrete process building. All the biogas was compressed and used to cofire the paper plant boiler.

A direct evaporation cooling tower was installed upstream of equalization to reject heat form the wastewater. The UASB distribution system was designed with clean out nozzles on both walls of the reactor to facilitate removal of scale which commonly forms in paper mill wastewater. A calcium crystallizer process and a DAF were added during second phase modifications of the original plant.
