BIOTIM® UAC: Upflow Anaerobic Contact Reactor

BIOTIM® UAC is a hybrid system designed for recovering biogas from wastewaters that inhibit granule formation or contain suspended solids.

Biogas from concentrated wastewaters

The BIOTIM® UAC reactor (Upflow Anaerobic Contact) is a hybrid anaerobic system designed for wastewaters that are too challenging for granular sludge UASB reactors – for example, effluents that do not readily form granules, contain high suspended solids, or require longer treatment time. In a UAC process, wastewater is mixed with an anaerobic biomass (similar to a completely stirred tank), but an external SEPAFLOC® separation unit is used to settle out biomass which is then recirculated back to the reactor.

This configuration retains a high concentration of microorganisms in contact with the wastewater (hence “contact” reactor) without relying on the self-immobilization of granules. Essentially, BIOTIM® UAC combines aspects of UASB and CSTR designs: the contact reactor provides thorough mixing and contact time, and the external SEPAFLOC® separator ensures biomass retention, allowing the system to handle difficult wastes efficiently.

Waterleau typically deploys BIOTIM® UAC reactors for medium to high COD wastewaters in the range of ~20–80 kg COD/m³, especially where conventional UASB performance is limited by poor sludge settleability or inhibitory compounds.

For instance, in the potato industry, extremely concentrated streams like process side streams or starch-laden wastes (hundreds of kg COD/m³) can be fed to a BIOTIM® UAC or CSTR to recover energy.

In one integrated project, Waterleau used a UAC reactor (with an external SEPAFLOC® clarifier for sludge separation and recirculation) to treat a brewery by-product stream in tandem with BIOTIM® UASB units – this combined approach captured the benefits of both reactor types and achieved a smaller overall footprint (up to 70% less space required) and lower effluent solids, easing post-treatment.

Advantages BIOTIM® UAC

  • Suitable for difficult-to-treat wastewater (e.g. high-solids, fibrous effluents such as pulp & paper or sugar wastes)
  • No reliance on granule formation, preventing biomass washout even with challenging substrates
  • Features an external settler for high biomass retention, ensuring robust COD removal and stable biogas generation
  • Scalable to high-flow, dilute waste streams, offering flexibility across a wide COD concentration range
  • Ideal for slowly biodegradable substrates, thanks to its efficient combination of contact and separation phases
  • Widely used by industrial clients (e.g. breweries, distilleries, food processors) to enhance energy recovery
  • Combines the complete mixing of a stirred tank reactor with the retention efficiency of an attached-growth system
  • Maintains reliable performance where other anaerobic technologies may struggle

Advantages SEPAFLOC® external separator

  • Better flow control: The flow rate, sludge concentration, and retention time can be managed independently in the reactor and separator
  • Higher sludge retention: Since sludge settles separately, there's less risk of sludge washout, even under high hydraulic loads.
  • More efficient phase separation: The external separator can be optimally designed (e.g., with lamella plates, inclined tubes) to improve separation efficiency.
  • Easier maintenance: There are fewer mechanical parts inside the reactor. Maintenance on the separator can be done without shutting down the reactor
  • More scalable and modular: The external unit can be expanded or upgraded later if capacity needs increase.
  • Greater robustness under fluctuating conditions: An external separator provides more stability when influent quality or flow varies significantly.
