Ecofrost's Sustainable Energy Transition with Waterleau's BIOTIM® Scrubber

Ecofrost

Ecofrost SA-NV, a prominent Belgian processor of potato products, is poised to double its production capacity within the next six months. This expansion necessitates an efficient and sustainable approach to wastewater management and energy recovery.

Ecofrost's Expansion and Energy Efficiency Goals

Ecofrost SA-NV, a prominent Belgian processor of potato products, is poised to double its production capacity within the next six months. This expansion necessitates an efficient and sustainable approach to wastewater management and energy recovery. At their Péruwelz production site, Ecofrost operates a comprehensive wastewater treatment facility featuring a large Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor. This UASB reactor effectively reduces organic pollutants in the wastewater while generating biogas, a renewable energy source utilized for power and heat production.

The Challenge: Hydrogen Sulfide in Biogas

To ensure the biogas is suitable for use in combined heat and power (CHP) units, it must undergo desulphurization to remove hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), a corrosive and harmful compound. In collaboration with Waterleau, Ecofrost has implemented three BIOTIM® scrubbers for this purpose. These scrubbers utilize washing liquid sourced directly from the aerobic waste water treatment plant to transfer and remove H₂S from the biogas. This innovative approach maintains H₂S levels in the BIOTIM ® scrubber's gas outlet far below 100 parts per million (ppm), ensuring the biogas is safe and efficient for CHP applications. In fact the results over 3 year’s have been so good that activated carbon is no longer necessary prior to the CHP units.

Waterleau's BIOTIM® Scrubber: High Performance with Low Costs

The integration of Waterleau's BIOTIM® scrubbers at Ecofrost has yielded remarkable results, achieving a 98% H₂S removal rate without the use of chemicals. This not only simplifies maintenance but also significantly reduces operational costs, aligning with Ecofrost's commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.

Ecofrost's Testimonial: A Partnership for Sustainability

Jeannot Hoflack, Ecofrost's Operations Director, has expressed satisfaction with the performance of the BIOTIM® scrubbers, highlighting their contribution to the company's energy efficiency and environmental goals. This collaboration exemplifies how innovative wastewater treatment and biogas purification technologies can support industrial growth while promoting environmental stewardship.
